PR 04: The Economics of Community Woodlands (J. Wong 2017)

A study of 15 Community Woodland Groups intended to bring about a greater understanding by policy makers and major land holders (e.g. NRW) of the economic viability of CWGs – specifically an understanding of the costs incurred by CWGs and how they are currently being met. While WG and others (e.g. NRW and LAs) are often keen to encourage the establishment of community woodlands, particularly for their role in generating Wellbeing and Future Generation benefits, there has to date been little attempt to understand the nature of the challenge CWGs face in terms of covering their costs.

PR 01: Scoping the delivery of Welsh Government policy goals by Community Woodland Groups

This study reviews the activities of Community Woodland Groups (CWGs) and how, albeit at a small scale, they meet strategic objectives of Welsh Government, most notably the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act (WFGA), and the Sustainable Management of Natural Resources (SMNR, derived from The Environment (Wales) Act). The study identifies where there is engagement with specific strategy outcomes, and where this is absent.

This case study sets out the story of a small woodland in Upper Cwmbran in the County borough of Torfaen that was This case study sets out the story of a small woodland in Upper Cwmbran in the County borough of Torfaen that was an early leasehold acquisition by the Forestry Commission in the 1930’s. Subsequent history saw the leasehold pass through private hands before an embryonic community group in the form of a Trust had the opportunity to take over the lease and bid for grant funding. In the process the community group evolved from a Trust to a Company limited by guarantee and has gone on to also become a registered Charity.

Wales, from ancient gorge woodlands barely touched by man to the regimented lines of planted
conifers. Many are potentially suitable for management by the local community, but how do
you go about getting involved? This Advisory Note sets out some basic ideas and approaches for
getting your community actively involved in managing the woodlands around you.

CS 14: Our 13-year learning journey – Prestatyn Community Woodland Group

This case study tells the story of a long standing community woodland group. They were actively involved in supporting the environmental management of a combination of sites in the heart of Prestatyn, North Wales. This case study describes the group and our aims, how they were formed and what they hoped to achieve in the future.
