Your Guide to Collecting Tree Seeds

We are pleased to announce that a series of Seed Collecting Guides are now available to download!

The first to put the guides to the test were community woodland group Llyn Parc Mawr, based near Newborough on Anglesey. On 23rd November they held a seed collecting event. Here eight volunteers spent the day with two members of staff, collecting 15 different species of tree seeds including dogrose, hawthorn and crabapple.

Tim Peters of Llyn Parc Mawr said ‘the day itself went really well and was a great socially distanced activity. We concluded the day around the fire, had hot drinks to warm up and a welcome cup of vegetable soup generously made by Chris our Secretary, board member and chief red squirrel feeding volunteer! Thanks to the Seed Collection Programme for providing us with these invaluable technical resources.’

During the autumn here at Llais y Goedwig the Seed Collection Programme was launched by the Dewis Gwyllt Project, with support from the Woodland Trust. A multitude of woodland groups and private woodland owners from across Wales replied to the Seed Collection Programme survey, demonstrating a keen interest in both collecting local provenance tree seeds and developing small scale nurseries. The guides were subsequently developed to provide practical information and outline the associated legal requirements.

Links with Welsh tree nurseries have now been established and a trading trial will take place next year. Here, using the new guides, groups and woodland owners will get the opportunity to sell their seeds to a registered trader. Many groups have already registered their interest in taking part – if you would like to get involved, or of you have any queries please contact Lucy Kew, Dewis Gwyllt Project Manager on 07877 574607, or by email:
