Woodlands for Wales indicators report 2013-14 – the state of Welsh woodlands & trees

The annual Woodland for Wales Indicators Report for 2013 -14 by Welsh Government has been released, providing information on the state of Welsh woodlands and trees, and the progress against the Welsh Government’s ‘Woodlands for Wales’ strategy.
This includes information on area of woodland, new planting, economic output and the amount of visits to woodland has been.

Key points

  • The area of woodland in Wales has increased over the last twelve years and is now 306,000 hectares.
  • The amount of new planting has increased since 2008; around 900 ha were planted last year.
  • The forestry sector in Wales has an annual Gross Value Added (GVA) of £455.7 million and employs between 8,500 and 11,300 people.
  • 64% of surveyed adults in Wales reported visiting woodland recreationally in the last few years.
