Community Woodland Opportunities for 2021

Whether you’re a well established Community Woodland Group or just starting out, we’re here to help you develop, learn and link in with other groups in 2021. Scroll down for information, ideas and suggestions, and if you have a question just ask!

Get in touch with the Llais y Goedwig staff team

Our Network Facilitator Zena Wilmot oversees the membership, Comms and events elements of our work. If you have a question about membership, want to contribute to the newsletter, suggest an event or simply don’t know the most appropriate person to contact with a query – contact Zena on

With experienced Development Officers in post in NW, NE, Mid, SW, S Central and SE Wales, we have a team with collective experience to support you whatever your needs – starting up work again post-covid, assessing risk, governance, practical woodland management techniques, INNS removal, starting a group from scratch, updating or creating a management plan, improving biodiversity brokering management agreements – the list goes on. We really can help – go on give it a try!

Skills  development training and bursaries

Whether your training needs include a thorough grounding in all things Community Woods, or veer more towards harvesting products or advanced felling techniques – we can help!

By building on existing resources, and drawing on the amazing range of experience of our staff team, board of directors and members we can arrange and support training on a broad range of woodland skills and activities.

We are developing a range of bespoke training for groups including:

  • A Woodland Health Survey to assess and monitor the health of your woodland and help with planning your work schedule
  • Hidden Opportunities – surveying your woodland for viable Non-Wood Forest Products
  • Safe and effectiveplanning and delivering of Community Woodland activities

We’ve partnered with Focus on Forestry First (FFF) to bring you tailored training for Community Woodlands and we can offer bursaries towards the cost of registering with FFF.

Contact your local Development Officer to discuss your groups training needs or to find out about FFF training and bursaries.

Attend events from home

Our events have moved online while we can’t get out in the woods – check out our  2021 events programme. These are completely free to Llais y Goedwig members so don’t forget to book your place!

Upcoming events include:

21st March – join us for a panel discussion on People and Forests, Wales and the Planet at the WOW film festival to celebrate the UN’s International Day of Forests.

23rd March – FSC Certification for small and Community Woods – what why and how? Explore how certification could benefit your woodlands with partners from FSC, Community Woods Association and Small Woods Association.

31st March – Sharing a Woodland – challenges, opportunities and creative solutions! Find out how member groups have dealt with conflicts and found positive workable solutions for everyone, and look at solutions for a challenge in your woods, with the help of others.

Click here for full details of these events and more!

We hope to move to a blend of online and in person events over the summer.

Community Woodland YouTube Channel!

You can dip into our growing library of free short films on a broad range of topics including birch tapping, seed saving and catch up on some of our previous events and activities!

Contact if you have any community woodland content you’d like us to upload or link to.

Dewis Gwyllt

The Llais y Goedwig run Dewis Gwyllt project continues to provide opportunities to get involved in wild woodland products-  – from birch sap to tree seeds, elderflower and essential oils. Alongside this we’re developing best practice and guidance on sustainable harvesting from the wild.  Contact to find out more

Travel Bursaries

Did you know we have funding available to support visits between community woodland groups? The best way to share knowledge and experience has to be over a cup of tea or whilst wandering around a fellow members woodland. We’ll be opening up the Llais y Goedwig Travel Bursary scheme when it’s practical and safe for visits to take place – contact your local Development Officer for more information and start lining up a visit!

Members survey

If you haven’t already reserved your slot to take part in this year’s members survey, book up now via Take this chance to tell us what you like about Llais y Goedwig and how we can best support you this year and in years to come.

If your plans for 2021 include some nifty practical work that could benefit from free tools, we have plenty of packs of Hand Axes to give away to Community Woodland Group members. Contact to reserve your pack and arrange a collection. We’re also developing resources to help you maintain your tools – look out for a link to our new tools maintenance video in future newsletters

Developing themes

Keep an eye out in future newsletters for information, opportunities and support dedicated to:

  • A Community Woodland marketplace – what could it look like? How would you like to use it to buy or sell products – a shop, an advertising platform, a swap shop or all three?
  • Virtual Community Woodland tour – for those of you who can’t get out in the woods as much as you’d like or as inspiration for projects in your wood – take a tour around our virtual Community Woodland – coming soon.
  • Supporting the delivery of Health & Wellbeing activities in your woods – training, resource sharing and information to support wellbeing activity in your woodlands

And finally!

For those of you that attended the Llais y Goedwig AGM as part of the Gathering in November 2020 this year – the minutes are available here

We look forward to seeing you at the next Gathering and AGM in Autumn 2021
