BLOG: Grow Wild in your community

In this Blog post Maria Golightly, Wales Engagement Manager for the Grow Wild Project discusses the diversity of the funding and what she loves about her role;

Grow Wild is the national outreach initiative of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew: encouraging millions of people to change lives and transform spaces through UK native wildflowers and fungi.  I personally have worked as the Wales Manager right from the beginning and have watched it grow (forgive the pun) from a great idea to reality.  Over the last 6 years, in Wales we have provided 4,000 seed kits for groups and 590 fungi groups.  We have also funded 24 Youth Projects and 57 Community-led across every Local Authority Area.

The thing I really like about this job is that every project is different and every group is different.  We’ve had projects that involve sand art, knitted bees and a meadow in a phone box and they’ve taken place in University grounds, Castle grounds, car parks, town centres, allotments and plenty of woodlands and orchards.   The one thing they all have in common is that they bring people together by encouraging them to connect through nature and inspire them to learn why native plants and fungi matter and we empower them to share their experiences with those around them

So if you have an idea for a project that you think might be suitable, why not check out these 2 funding rounds we have open at the moment.

Community Funding – Grants of £2,000 or £4,000 to groups across the UK to deliver projects in their community focused on UK native wildflowers, plants and fungi.  Closing Date 10 December.

Youth Funding.  Grants of £500 for young people aged 14-25 to do something creative and collaborative, inspired by UK native plants and fungi.

If you have any queries at all, or want to chat through your project idea drop me an email to with your phone number and I’ll give you a call.
