  • Coedwig Cymunedol Longwood Community Woodland, near Lampeter, have just received the news that they have a grant of £787,714  from the BIG lottery fund to acquire land from the Forestry Commission Wales (FCW) and deliver a number of activities and services for the local community. The plans include a natural green burial site, the running of educational programmes through the forest school, renting out of the outdoor theatre and an eco camp site.
Welcoming the grant, Group Chair Philip Swain, said: “It is fantastic news and the culmination of many years and a lot of hard work by local people to save the woodland, which is heavily used by the public, as an important community asset. We now have a great opportunity to return Longwood, in an environmentally sustainable way, to traditional native woodland and also of providing an exciting program of educational, social and work opportunities to the people of Ceredigion.”

  • Volunteer opportunities coming up at Golygfa Gwydyr
    Read their press coverage HERE
Golygfa Gwydyr should soon have up to 24 volunteer spaces in Llanrwst for local unemployed people, to work in woodland management and sales of logs for wood fuel.
Volunteers can gain five-day certificated chain saw course, strimming, spraying for weed control, health and safety for forestry activities..
The aim is to train up to 12 people each year for two years, then keep a rolling training programme to replace volunteers who have moved on into full-time work. Using the Golygfa Gwydyr Job Club, also based in Llanrwst, they will build a portfolio of training and work experience for each volunteer and help with job search and applications. When the business takes off they are hoping to take on some volunteers as paid employees themselves.
They also need woodland owners, who need help with woodland management to contact them- people who want to bring their woodlands into production but their woodlands are too small or inaccessible for large-scale commercial forestry contractors to operate economically.
If you are unemployed, living in rural Conwy, and would like to register for these positions, contact Roger Davies/Tina Hill at Golygfa Gwydyr, Plough Street, Llanrwst, LL26 0AG.
