New name for Knighton woodland group.

Knighton Community Woodlands Group’ was announced this week as the new name for Knighton Tree Allotments Trust, and they are launching the new name with their latest training course.

The organisation is 10 years old this year,” explained Jamie Ritchie of the Group, “and we are taking this anniversary as an opportunity to review our activity and to plan for the future. One thing we noted is that the name ‘Knighton Tree Allotments Trust’ did not reflect the nature of the organisation. We feel that our new name of Knighton Community Woodlands Group gives a much better idea of who we are and what we do.”

Knighton Community Woodlands Group consists of local volunteers who come together one day each week to enjoy, conserve and enrich their environment by managing local woodlands. They learn and share woodland skills, and use those skills to improve habitats for wildlife and to allow members access to affordable woodland products such as logs.

The Group runs training courses in order to raise funds for its activities so, to go with the new name, it is running an ‘Introduction to Woodland Management’ training course in the Knighton area on the 7th, 14th and 21st March 2020, from 9.30am to 3.00pm each day.

Our training is for those who would like to know more about small woodlands and growing sustainable products such as firewood” said Gary Cowell, who volunteers with the Group. “It’s the theory and practice of woodland management for beginners. Day 1 is a classroom-based and all about how we can grow woodland products whilst protecting and enhancing biodiversity. The woodland-based training on days 2 & 3 covers the practical skills used in traditional management, such as coppicing and splitting logs. The course is fun, sociable and informative and open to everyone – no prior knowledge or experience is needed.”

I enjoyed the teamwork and thinking through problems together,” said Chris Naylor, who previously attended the course. He added that there was a “very good feeling you’d achieved something practical – and learnt a lot”.

The training course costs £33 for Day 1 only, £66 for Days 2 and 3 only, or £99 for all 3 days. More information can be found at: www.tveg.org.uk or via email woodland@tveg.org.uk or telephone 01547 520374.
