About Llais y Goedwig

Llais y Goedwig is proud to be the voice of community woodlands in Wales. We are a 300 member strong grassroots network. Llais y Goedwig aims to represent & support community groups & practitioners across Wales.

Partnerships

Working closely together

Llais y Goedwig has established working relationships with many organisations (both statutory and independent) in the forestry and voluntary sectors in Wales. When it comes to forestry in Wales it is vital to seek out and work with organisations that support community woodlands.

Llais y Goedwig maintains a strong connection with our sister organisation in Scotland, the Community Woodlands Association (CWA) and regularly welcome representatives to our annual gathering. Llais y Goedwig are also keen to encourage reciprocal attendance at the Scottish annual meeting.

Formal partnership agreements

Since 2010, Llais y Goedwig has entered into formal partnerships with a number of organisations. A full list of partnerships and projects is found below.

Members are welcome to see full details of partnership agreements and project updates on request. The Llais y Goedwig Board oversees the delivery of agreed ‘outputs’ and ‘outcomes’ and ensures progress reports are submitted on time.

Active Partnership Agreements

Currently we have active partnership agreements with Natural Resources Wales and the European Forestry Institute (Star Tree), and a Memorandum of Understanding with the Woodland Trust (Coed Cadw).

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) – Partnership Agreement

In March 2014 LlyG and NRW agreed a two year partnership agreement to enable Llais y Goedwig to continue to support community woodland groups across Wales.

The work supported by this agreement helps to deliver a number of Welsh Government and NRW targets including the Programme for Government Action Plan commitment 10/025 to ensure woodlands are for people -serving local needs for health education and jobs. The partnership also directly supports delivery of the Welsh Government’s Woodlands for You Action Plan, and contributes to NRW’s Business Plan for 2014-2015.

Llais y Goedwig’s agreed work programme focusses on 4 key areas: (1) Networking among CWGs, (2) Resources to meet CWGs needs, (3) Raising the profile of CWGs and (4) Engagement in policy dialogue. The details of the activities, outputs and completion dates are set out in Appendix 1 of the Agreement. Progress reports are compiled three times a year. To see copies of these contact Llais y Goedwig.

StarTree – Multi Purpose Trees & Non Wood Forest Products Project – ‘a challenge and an opportunity’.

Llais y Goedwig is a partner in an FP7 research project (EU funded) ‘StarTree‘ that will provide information and evidence to help develop and expand the NWFP sector in Wales. This work will give LlyG members and small woodland owners and managers across Wales the chance to increase their income from non timber forest products in their woods.

The project will run for 4 years (2012 to 2016), and Llais y Goedwig is one of 24 partners across 14 different regions of Europe. Working with our European partners will give us a chance to learn from the wealth of exciting and interesting projects and products using NWFPs from Portugal to Finland.

The Star Tree Project Coordinator, Maria Wilding is based at the Forestry Hub in Machynlleth. Maria prepares comprehensive progress reports for the Llais y Goedwig board bi-monthly. To see copies of these contact Llais y Goedwig.

Woodland Trust/Coed Cadw – Memorandum of Understanding

In May 2014, Llais y Goedwig and the Woodland Trust/Coed Cadw finalised a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ to support community woodland development and the wider woodland sector in Wales.

The Memorandum sets out how Llais y Goedwig and the Woodland Trust propose to work together and the actions that both sides commit to undertake. To read the MOU, download via the link below.

Under this Memorandum, Llais y Goedwig will undertake an agreed programme of work in 2014 to help develop community woodland culture in Wales. Key activities funded under this programme will include: evidence gathering for a major funding bid to support community woodlands in Wales, 5 regional community woodland networking events, and advising the Woodland Trust on enhanced opportunities for the transfer of Woodland Trust site responsibility to community woodland groups.

In early 2014 the Woodland Trust (in partnership with Llais y Goedwig) successfully applied to be an Environment Wales Core Partner. In June 2014 the newly recruited Woodland Trust Environment Wales Development Officer, based at the Forestry Hub in Machynlleth will start work.

The new Development Officer will spend 75% of their time fulfilling the Woodland Trust’s commitment to the Environment Wales initiative and the remaining 25% of their time supporting community woodland groups as agreed by the Trust in partnership with Llais y Goedwig.
